Dog Attacks: How to Protect Yourself on Walks and Runs

According to the CDC, approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur in the United States every year. While most encounters with dogs are friendly, an aggressive or off-leash dog can turn a routine walk or run into a dangerous situation fast. Here's how to stay safe.

Recognize the Warning Signs

Dogs typically communicate aggression before they attack. Learn to recognize these signals:

  • Stiff, rigid body posture — tense muscles rather than relaxed movement
  • Hard, sustained eye contact — a stare without blinking
  • Raised hackles — fur standing up along the neck and back
  • Low growling or snarling — especially with lips pulled back to show teeth
  • Weight shifted forward — preparing to lunge

A wagging tail does not always mean friendliness. A stiff, high wag combined with other warning signs still signals aggression.

If a Dog Approaches Aggressively

  1. Stop moving. Running triggers a dog's chase instinct — the worst thing you can do is run away.
  2. Stand sideways. Avoid direct eye contact and present a smaller profile. Don't stare the dog down.
  3. Stay calm and still. Keep your arms at your sides and speak in a calm, firm voice.
  4. Back away slowly once the dog's interest decreases — never turn your back abruptly.
  5. Put something between you. A bag, jacket, bike, or any object creates a barrier.

If the Dog Attacks

If an attack is imminent, protect your throat and face. Offer your non-dominant forearm to bite rather than your face or throat. Use your dominant hand, elbow, or any object to strike the dog's nose or the back of the head — these are sensitive areas.

Get to safety and seek medical attention immediately after any bite, regardless of severity — infection risk is significant.

The Best Tool for Dog Encounters: Mace® Muzzle Dog Repellent

The most effective and humane way to stop an aggressive dog before contact is our Mace® Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray. It uses an EPA-registered formula specifically designed for canines — effective at up to 10 feet and engineered to deter without causing permanent harm to the animal.

Runners, cyclists, mail carriers, and hikers regularly carry this spray as a standard part of their kit. It attaches to a belt or bag for instant access.

Note: Standard pepper spray can also be used on dogs in an emergency — it will deter an aggressive animal. However, the Mace Muzzle formula is optimized specifically for canines and is the preferred choice.
